Enhancing health education through digital pedagogy: Evaluating the impact of computer-assisted learning on junk food awareness

Aisharya Priyadarshini Samal and Sathish Rajamani

Background of the Study: School kids are eating more junk food since it's easy to make and eat. But eating too much junk food is connected to a lot of health problems, including obesity. To make health interventions that work, it's important to know what factors affect people's preferences for junk food, how much they eat, and how much they spend on it.
Objectives: The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of a “Computer-Assisted Teaching (CAT) program” on children's understanding the damaging “effects of junk foods” at SSVM, Dengibhadhi, Sundargarh.
Methodology: In our research, we have purposefully selected 30 schoolchildren for discussion. The questions in this section used both multiple-choice and true-false type formats and were aimed at judging how much junk food harms one's health. To evaluate the effect of the CAT program on knowledge levels, pretest and post-test assessments were conducted.
Results: The pre-test result showed that 6% (2) of the respondents had good knowledge,?while 90% (27) moderately knew and only 4% (1) had poor knowledge about effects of junk food. Post-test findings indicated a?great achievement such that 77% (23) had good level of knowledge and 23% (7) moderate. The?mean and SD of the knowledge scores before intervention was 16 ± 3.16, while this after it was 21.46 ± 1.66 (p<.001). Knowledge gain was therefore?statistically significant with a paired t-test of 8.26 (p<0.00001), and this mean favored the research hypothesis.
Conclusion: The research concluded that taking junk food increases the chances of both general and abdominal obesity in school going?children. To prevent these risks, one can decrease the intake of unhealthy food by controlling TV ads and raising?tax on junk foods.
