Introduction: Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic respiratory diseases as well as a common chronic non-communicable ailment among both adults and children, characterized by variable respiratory symptoms and ?uctuating air?ow limitations. According to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines, over 300 million individuals worldwide are a?ected by asthma. Industrial workers suffering with bronchial asthma is a huge problem of occupational health in India. The causes are workplace inhalational hazards such as dust, fumes, and organic substances can cause various non-malignant respiratory diseases. In 2022, India had an estimated 35 million people with asthma out of a population of 1.36 billion. While asthma affects a large number of people, India also bears a significant burden of asthma-related deaths with 450, 000 deaths annually.
Objectives: 1. To assess the knowledge regarding prevention of Bronchial Asthma among Industrial workers. 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding prevention of bronchial asthma among the industrial workers. 3.To find out the association between the pre-test knowledge with the selected socio demographic variables such as age, religion, marital status type of family, educational qualification, income per month, area of residence, source of information regarding the prevention of bronchial asthma.
Materials and Methods: A Pre- Experimental one group pre -test post -test design was used for the study. The research was conducted in wood industry at Mangaluru, Karnataka. A probability simple random sampling technique was used to select 30 industrial workers. The knowledge regarding prevention of bronchial asthma was assessed and structured teaching programme was implemented. The post test was conducted with same tool after 7 days of teaching. The information booklet was distributed to the workers for the further use.
Results: The result findings revealed that in the pre-test, the majority of the workers 18(60%) had moderate knowledge regarding prevention of bronchial asthma, 7(23%) had adequate knowledge regarding prevention of bronchial asthma, 5(17%) had inadequate knowledge regarding prevention of bronchial asthma. Whereas, in the post-test, the findings revealed that 29(97%) had adequate knowledge, 1(3%) had a moderate knowledge, none of them had inadequate knowledge. The workers were having inadequate knowledge in the area of knowledge regarding bronchial asthma (48%) in the pre-test and workers gained the adequate knowledge (80%) after the teaching programme. In pre-test the workers was having moderate knowledge (54%) and in post -test workers gained the adequate knowledge (86%). The pre-test score with standard deviation was 20.56±5.56 and mean percentage score was 51% and the post- test mean score with standard deviation was 33.23±4.16 and the mean percentage score was 83%. The enhancement of knowledge was 32%. The obtained “t” value was 29 which was greater than the table value at p<0.05 level of significance showed that the teachong programme was effective. The study concluded that a structured teaching programme on prevention of bronchial asthma was effective in improving the knowledge among industrial workers. Hence, the formulated research hypothesis H1 was accepted. There was a no significant association found between socio - demographic variables with knowledge of prevention bronchial asthma. Hence the formulated research hypothesis H2 was rejected.
Conclusion: The study concluded that knowledge level among the industrial workers was improved after the implementation of a structured teaching program on knowledge regarding prevention of bronchial asthma.
