Knowledge regarding hand, foot, and mouth disease in children among ASHA workers in selected community: Descriptive study

Background: Children are at a greater risk of infections than adults for a number of reasons. Most important is the immune system, which is needed to control the infection processes. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a contagious viral infection common in infants and young children.

Methodology: A descriptive study was conducted among 169 ASHA workers to assess the knowledge regarding hand, foot, and mouth disease in children from selected areas of Maharashtra. Data were collected by using pretested and validated structured Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 16) analytical package and the chi-square test was performed. The scoring system was used to categorize the level of knowledge about hand, foot, and mouth disease in children.

Results: All 169 participants were female, majorly 112 (66.27%) of ASHA workers were 25-28 of years of age, 120 (71%) of them were completed HSC, 78 (46.15%) of them had 3-4 years of experience. In regard to hand, foot, and mouth disease in children, means knowledge score was 15.76, median 15, SD 3.7, Range of score 11-23. In this maximum 121 (71.59%) of them were had poor knowledge regarding hand, foot, and mouth disease in children. There was no statistically significant association between demographic variable of ASHA workers such as age in years, educational qualification and years of experience with knowledge scores related to hand, foot, and mouth disease in children.

Conclusion: Most of the ASHA workers had poor knowledge on various parts of hand, foot, and mouth disease in children. But they were unaware about the disease, clinical manifestations and its diagnosis, specific differences with other similar diseases have same manifestations. These aspects of hand, foot, and mouth disease in children need to be reinforced into the refresher trainings of the ASHA workers.
